Off-topic. Please read.

I watched a movie today, it's called Sharkwater and tells about well.. sharks. But not just sharks - it tells about how millions of them are killed every year for their fins. What I did not know ( and I am sure - lots of people are completely unaware of it too!) is that an estimated 90(!)% of all shark population is already extinguished. The other thing that I didn't know is that over 50% of oxygen in this world is produced by oceans' phytoplankton. Small sea animals eat phytoplankton, and sharks, as top predators control the population of those animals. Now, if (or "when" I should say) the sharks are gone, the overpopulating sea creatures will eat up a lot more of that phytoplankton, meaning LESS oxygen for us. It's that simple. SHARKWATER The sharks are caught, their fins are cut off and their bodies (still alive!) are thrown back into the ocean to die...I can't write this without crying... Natallia.

Green your baby's nursery

We are re-decorating our home. Good bye old carpets and wall paper. In all that rush to get everything done before holidays I realize I do not know what to do with my son's nursery. It is still very new, since we only set it up about a year and a half ago right before he was born. Being completely unaware of all the toxins hidden in our household items like vinyl in wallpaper, formadehyde in carpets and wrinkle resistant curtains, paint and laminate floors we just wanted it to look pretty and well...baby like.
But what has to be done - has to be done! Going through tons of materials to choose from I outlined the most basic things, like carpeting, paint, furniture and bedding that should be as "clean" as possible:
Floors. Yes, a soft polyester carpet in bright colors might seem like a perfect choice, but it off-gasses toxic chemicals right into the air your little one is breathing. Vinyl flooring is a big no-no. A much healthier alternative is a natural, easy to clean surface like inexpensive and stylish bamboo or other prefinished wood flooring. Throw a rug on top with a no-skid undermat, something you can wash and air dry once in a while.

Furniture. Most of the furniture you see in the stores today is made with chipboard and pressboard. The glue that holds it together contains formaldehyde which can off-gas into the air for years! Which is why choosing a solid wood or metal furniture is your best option health-wise. While it can be quite pricey, buying used furniture can save you hundreds of dollars. The only thing you should not get second-hand is a crib, for safety reasons.

Bedding and clothing. Did you know that most of baby bedding is treated with fire resistant chemicals and most of new clothing contains formaldehyde? The least you can do is to wash everything before using it to help draw out harmful chemicals. But better yet, choose clothing and bedding made with organic and natural fibers that are chemical-free.

Windows. Stick with wooden or metal blinds and don't buy wrinkle resistant curtains. As pretty as they may look they all contribute to the chemicals off-gas into the air your family is breathing.
Personal care products. Stuff like air fresheners, fabric softeners adn petrolium based body care products all contain potential cancerogens and irritants. While shopping, look for natural and organic skin care products. Stay away from heavy scented lotions, creams and shampoos. They may contain phtalates and parabens, potent endocrine disruptors and irritants.
Once you start "greening up" your home, the possibilities are endless! Don't stop there, choose organic and local food, use less plastic, drive smaller car. Your children will thank you for this.

Cloth diapers - new arrivals in Organic By Nature store

Just arrived! Delicious organic terry contour diapers and AIOs!Cloth_Diapers_Terry_Contour_Diaper_-_single  Cloth_Diapers_All-in-One_-_single

This very soft organic terry contour diaper is made with thick and fluffy organic cotton  terry for maximum absorbency and features elastic in the legs for added protection against leaks. Another benefit is its quick drying time. It is also less bulky than other terry cloth diapers on the market. This diaper is ideal for daytime, nighttime and heavy wetters. It works great with any of the diaper covers, and because of the generous wings, there is no need for pins.
A contour diaper is a number of layers of absorbent fabric cut in bone or an hourglass shape. Some may also have elastic around the legs and waist for a better fit. This diaper does not have snaps or velcro tape - it just wraps around baby's body for ultimate comfort and will require diaper cover to support it and make it water-proof.
This is a one-size cloth diaper which means it will last from birth to potty, making it very economical choice.
We generally have 1-2 of each item in stock for immediate shipping. If you would like to order larger quantities of this item - just make a note in the comment box during your checkout process and we will gladly place a custom order for you. Custom orders usually take about 2-4 weeks to complete.

cool green skin care tricks

Every time I buy a new skin care product I make sure it does not contain harmful chemicals. But some things are very hard to find without any of that. So I learned a couple of tricks on how to avoid harmful substances without compromising my style:

Instead of hairspray or gel try to apply plain aloe vera gel. Works just great!

In the morning, slap a spoonful of plain organic yogurt on your face. Excellent moisturizer and you know exactly what's in it.

If you know more tips and tricks, you are welcome to share them here!

First Green Birthday!

Our baby Max turned 1 this summer and although we decided not to have a party we ended up having a bunch of friends and children over who just wanted to wish the little guy a happy birthday. There were no plastic desposable tableware or paper napkins!
It's been a very good educational year for us. His allergies and skin conditions improved significantly thanks to balanced wholesome food and organic baby skin care. Looking back over the past year I realize how much my life changed. We became a lot more aware of environmental problems, the benefits of organic life style, toxic waste and plastic overuse around us. Like many of our "green" friends I only want to say - I wish I made the change sooner!

the turning point - what was yours?

It's different for everyone... For us it was the birth of our second child - Maximus, that made us realize that unless we reconsider our way of living, we are going to destroy our world in no time!
Max was born with a full set of allergies and a very sensitive skin. Even the most gentle baby cream would trigger a severe eczema that would last for weeks. To keep it under control, we had to apply steroid cream on him several times a day. I hated the idea of putting stuff on my baby's skin the name of which I could not even pronounce! While searching the web for more natural alternatives we have learned a lot about
different chemicals that are present in most non-organic or natural skin care products. We have learned that many of them are really bad for you and can cause deseases like cancer.
After we switched to
natural skin care products for our son, we saw the difference after just a few hours! His skin cleared almost completely now.
This little change made us re-think other things in our life that affect us and our planet in a harmful way. Reading about billions (!) of tons of desposable diaper waste buried in our landfill made me switch to
cloth diapers. It was a lot easier then I thought it would be, seriously!
Then the rest followed: no more plastic bags, only local and organic produce on our grocery shopping list, smaller cars,
natural fiber clothing and so on, the list is getting longer every day.
Consider organics for yourself and your family. Not only you will feel good about yourself, you will also leave a cleaner, healthier world for your kids.
